To date, the literature examined how demographic factors9, 10, 11 and practice culture 12 are related to physician adoption of e-prescribing, what physician beliefs 9 and perceptions 13 are about e-prescribing, and the barriers they experience, and the concerns they have reported.9, 14, 15 The objectives of this study were to: (1) provide an update on e-prescribing use among primary care physicians (PCPs), (2) describe prescribers' experience with e-prescribing, and (3) provide insight into prescribers' decisions to implement e-prescribing in their practices. 6 As such, most e-prescribing barriers are now thought to lie on the prescriber side of the distribution chain and include cost of implementation and maintenance, time required to integrate e-prescribing into workflow, and patient confidentiality concerns. 9 However, barriers associated with pharmacists are becoming less significant, as approximately 91% of community pharmacies in the United States are connected for electronic prescription routing, and the 6 largest mail order pharmacies can now receive prescriptions electronically. 6 Although the adoption of e-prescribing is growing, it has not grown at a rate that met the Institute of Medicine's recommendation that all prescriptions be routed electronically by 2010.7, 8 Slower than desired adoption of e-prescribing is likely because of the barriers that have been associated with both prescribers and pharmacists.
